Amador Plaza Office
Keeping Nextel cell sites active while re-roofing the Amador Plaza offices in Dublin, CA, was one of the key challenges faced by Enterprise Roofing Service, Inc. of Concord, CA.
Nextel leased space on the 13,500-square-feet roof for four cell antennas, each of which was surrounded by a sightscreen to keep it from being visible from the ground. The sightscreens rested on 81 sleepers, which had to be removed, re-installed and waterproofed.
"We were challenged to coordinate moving the antennas, tearing off the old roof and installing the new Johns Manville built-up roofing system," said Larry Reardon, president, Enterprise Roofing. "Nextel's crews had to move the antennas and wiring, and then move them back again. We needed to coordinate with them and also inform the building owners and tenants."
Crews secured the 6 inch by 4 feet sleepers to the roof deck and then covered the deck with a base flashing and metal cap. "With so many sleepers, this was a slow, tedious task," Reardon said.
Antenna maintenance necessitates a lot of foot traffic, which is one of the reasons Reardon felt a built-up roofing system was ideal for this project. He prefers the redundancy and performance of multi-ply systems.
Crews nailed a PermaPly® 28 base sheet to the half-inch plywood deck and then hot-mopped two layers of GlasPly® IV ply sheet in asphalt. They then capped the roof with JM's new GlasKap® CR cap sheet to enable to system to comply with California's Title 24 energy efficiency regulations. The mineral-surfaced, white acrylic-coated fiber glass cap sheet provides extra protection to the membrane and underlying asphalt.
"GlasKap CR is a great product," Reardon said. "It saved the building owner the cost of putting on two layers of coating and allowed our company to continue to roof the same way we have for the last 45 years."
